Building Control Guidance
Solid-fuel appliances and flexible flue liners in Northern Ireland
CleanFlue NI works to current Northern Ireland Building Regulations and local Building Control requirements. Solid-fuel appliance installation and associated chimney or flue-lining work are controlled building work.
OUR COMPLIANCE PROCESS
- 1Notify before work
The intended installation of a solid-fuel appliance or flexible flue liner is notified to the relevant local council Building Control service before work begins.
- 2Install to current standards
The appliance, hearth, ventilation, flue and clearances are installed to the applicable Northern Ireland requirements and manufacturer instructions.
- 3Arrange inspection
Building Control is kept informed so the required inspection can be arranged, including the completion stage.
- 4Test and commission
The appliance and flue are tested and commissioned to confirm that the completed installation can operate safely.
- 5Supply certificates
CleanFlue NI supplies the relevant commissioning and safety documentation. If satisfied, the council issues its Building Regulations Completion Certificate.
WHAT BUILDING CONTROL LOOKS FOR
- Sufficient permanent air supply for safe combustion
- A suitable flue that discharges combustion products safely
- Correct chimney or liner size, material, route and termination
- A correctly positioned carbon-monoxide alarm
- A suitable non-combustible hearth and safe distances from combustible material
- Access for inspection and maintenance where required
- A durable information notice for the hearth and flue
- Testing, commissioning and suitable installation records
