Customer Stove Guidance
Keep your stove running safely and efficiently
A high-grade stainless-steel liner can give many years of safe service when the appliance is used and maintained correctly. Read and follow good burning and maintenance practice.
DO’S
- Read the manufacturer’s operating instructions carefully before using the appliance.
- Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the room where the appliance is installed. The supplied guidance identifies this as the customer’s responsibility and a Building Control requirement.
- Burn the correct fuel for the appliance.
- Use a moisture meter. Wood or smokeless fuel should be below 20% moisture content.
- Burn seasoned, split logs stacked under cover with free air circulation for 12–24 months; split and test a sample log before use.
- Sweep the chimney at least once each year, or more often depending on fuel and use. The guide recommends a power-sweeping head suitable for the flue diameter rather than a ball and brush.
- Avoid chimney fires. After any chimney fire, have the flue checked by a qualified engineer.
- Provide enough air. A stove above 5kW requires additional ventilation; the guide also states that homes built in or after 2008 require ventilation regardless of output.
- Expect a new stove to emit some odour while its paint hardens and cures.
- Use a stove thermometer to check that you are burning at the correct temperature.
- Leave a bed of ash when burning wood.
- Remove and clean the stove throat plate of any build-up.
DON’TS
- Do not burn wet or green wood, painted or treated timber, household refuse, or petrochemical by-product coal substitutes; they can create deposits and toxic gases and corrode the liner.
- Do not store fuel around the stove; it can catch fire.
- Do not allow a stove to slumber for long periods. This increases soot and debris build-up and the risk of a chimney fire, and can damage a metal liner.
- Do not overload the stove or exceed the appliance and flue system’s maximum operating temperature.
- Do not burn house coal in a stove; use only smokeless coal authorised for the appliance.
- Do not mix wood logs and coal in the same fire; the supplied guidance warns this can damage metal flue liners.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the appliance and fuel.
Regular servicing and sweeping keep the stove safe and efficient.
Ensure adequate room ventilation at all times.
Keep children, pets and flammable materials away from the stove.
