Chimney Repointing

Restore · protect · preserve

i

Repointing helps protect a chimney from weather damage, reduces water ingress and can extend the life of the brickwork when the correct mortar and method are used.

THE REPOINTING PROCESS

  1. 1
    Inspection & assessment

Inspect brickwork and pointing, recording loose, cracked or weathered mortar and areas needing attention.

  2. 2
    Preparation

Carefully rake out loose or damaged mortar to the correct depth — usually two to three times the joint width — while avoiding damage to the bricks.

  3. 3
    Cleaning

Wash down the chimney once dust and debris have been removed.

  4. 4
    Repointing

Mix the correct mortar and firmly apply it to the joints using traditional techniques for a strong, weatherproof finish.

  5. 5
    Finishing

Finish the mortar neatly to match the existing chimney and remove excess material.

  6. 6
    Final check

After curing, wash down to remove stains or residue and complete a final inspection.

WHY REPOINT YOUR CHIMNEY?

Prevents water ingress

Damaged mortar can let rain enter brickwork, causing damp, staining and internal damage.

Maintains structural integrity

Sound mortar holds bricks together and helps prevent loose brickwork or partial collapse.

Improves efficiency and safety

A maintained chimney supports proper flue operation and reduces the chance of smoke leakage.

Saves money

Timely repointing may avoid more expensive repairs later.

Improves appearance

Fresh, consistent pointing restores the look of the chimney.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE

Weather-dependent work

Repoint only in suitable dry conditions; mortar needs time to cure and extreme weather can affect the finish.

The mortar matters

Use appropriate lime-based mortar for older chimneys and cement-based mortar only where suitable. The wrong mortar can trap moisture.

Colour and finish

Match the existing chimney as closely as practical for a consistent, traditional appearance.

Inspect regularly

Periodic checks help identify issues early.

Pair with a chimney health check

Repointing is a sensible time to sweep and inspect the flue and chimney.

IMPORTANTAlways follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions for your appliance and fuel. Keep this guidance for future reference.
